Fiji 2009
In the spring of 2009 Dr. Dave returned with the Canadian Animal
Assistance Team to help his
wife Dr. Beth, a veterinarian, to run a spay/neuter clinic on one of
the remote islands off Fiji Kandavu. The goal of the spay/neuter
program is to help control the population of semi-wild dogs and cats
that can
effect local drinking water and native animal habitat.
Dr. Beth and Dr. Dave were very excited to return and
see their results of there previous projects in 2006. The villages that
they had worked in now have less starving cats and dogs resulting in
healthier animals and happier owners, along with less feces
contaminating local water supply. We also assumed there would be less
negative impact on the local wildlife population. The program appeared
to be a true success with the animals as well as a real hit with the
locals as well.
Dr. Dave: “I
love my job which is very exciting. I assess, catch, inject and
pre-sedate the semi-wild dogs and cats with the help of a team of local
kids. I then do the pre-surgical scrub and generally try to run the
vets ragged all day long.”
